Ghost Stories | A Horror Movie Review

Ghost Stories Movie Review:

Ghost Stories is a horror movie I have wanted to watch for a while.

Every week, I listen to Blumhouse.com’s Shock Waves Podcast. The beginning of each episode they roundtable all the stuff they watched in the past week. Ghost Stories was one of the movies they kept raving about. I was eager this past Sunday to watch it.

Classing Up The Horror Genre:

Before getting into the review, I want to address how classy this film is. It is a British Film that upped the ante in the art department for horror. Ghost Stories is filmed in such a way that not only does it scare you but it makes you admire how beautiful the film is.

Ghost Stories is about a man named Professor Goodman. He has a reality TV show where he goes around calling out fraudulent “psychics.” Goodman believes that these people prey on the pain of others. His life’s mission is to expose them for what they are – bullshit artists.

From the jump, we can see that there is an ulterior motive behind Professor Goodman’s heroism. He was raised Orthodox Jewish. His upbringing wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows.

Not only is he out to prove that psychics are frauds, but that there is no afterlife. Goodman suggests that science can explain everything and that there is no paranormal.

Unsolved Mysteries:

After the intro to the movie, Goodman gets contacted by Charles Cameron.

Cameron is the reason Goodman started his life’s mission. To denounce the thought of there being an afterlife.

When Goodman meets up with him, Charles tells him about three stories that he can’t seem to prove are false.

Professor Goodman is up to the task his hero lays in front of him. He takes up the offer to prove these cases are fake.

The three cases Goodman is to investigate are:

  1. A Nightwatchmen who sees the ghost of a girl at an asylum he works at.
  1. A teenager who has a hit and run encounter with Satan on a deserted back road.
  1. A businessman who experiences paranormal events in his home.

As Ghost Stories progresses, we see that Goodman (although believing these cases are still false) is having messed up visions of his own.

Dread and Terror:

Ghost Stories is a movie that is all about mood.

The movie is nothing short of beautiful. From shots of distant figures to the “ghosts” themselves, Ghost Stories looks amazing.

Because of the atmosphere in Ghost Stories, I felt myself scanning around every scene in the film. It is a movie where you know that there are pieces of the puzzle lurking in each frame.

If you have read any other of my horror movie reviews, then you know I am over jump scares. While Ghost Stories does have a few it does not rely on them at all.

Ghost Stories is a film that radiates dread and terror.

Male/Female Dynamics:

I read an interesting dynamic in a review of Ghost Stories on DreadCentral.com. In their review, they point out the male/female dynamic in this film.

The cast is almost all males and they are all plagued by female hauntings. I thought this was interesting and something I didn’t pick up on before reading their review.

Conclusion:Image result for ghost stories movie

I haven’t stopped thinking about Ghost Stories since I finished it Sunday evening.

When this happens, I know we have a winner for the horror genre. From the writing to the cinematography, Ghost Stories is a movie that will haunt you as well as intrigue you.

Ghost Stories is one of the best horror films this year!
