Demon House: Documentary Review

I have been waiting to see the documentary Demon House since it was first announced. This past week, after years of waiting, it released.

Although Demon House was a very entertaining movie, I have some issues with it that I will discuss below.

I have been a huge fan of Zak Bagans and Ghost Adventures since the first documentary they released. The show is one of the most entertaining things on TV.

I haven’t got to watch Ghost Adventures as much as I would like, but my love for it remains.

If you are a fan of Ghost Adventures or the paranormal, make sure you see Demon House immediately. The documentary is without a doubt worth your time.

The interviews with people who have come in contact with Demon House are fascinating. Discussions over what these people went through are intense and terrifying.

Demon House is filmed in a way that keeps you wanting more. Zak did an excellent job putting the pieces together. The documentary delivers an entertaining yet grim experience.

I don’t want to spoil Demon House with the positives so I am going to discuss some of the cons here:

Reenactments:

The people Zak interviews at the beginning of the film don’t have actual evidence of the events. This means that we see reenactments of the tales they tell. I felt the reenactments were over the top.

Shows like Paranormal Witness are shows that I can’t watch because of this. The reenactments drag the documentary down a bit with their cheese.

Zak discusses a demon goat figure he saw in a dream. In the beginning, it’s a cool visual, but after the first time, it doesn’t add much to Demon House.

The sound effects coupled with the imagery doesn’t make Demon House any better. They should have left the reenactments out.

They make you question if what you are watching is a “real” documentary at all. Questions arose in my head a few times because of this.

Theories:

Demon House also has some “far-fetched” moments. I noticed this happening more in the latest seasons of Ghost Adventures. There are parts of the film where I questioned the authenticity of the theories.

The evidence in some circumstances has Zak reaching a little bit.

The Ending (No Spoilers):

The last con I have with Demon House is the ending.

At the end of the film, we get presented the best piece of evidence throughout the entire documentary. Unfortunately, we see the evidence through a blurry lens and cant make out what is there.

The reason why I question this is that we had other camera angles they could’ve shown to us. We never get to see the finale from those angles – only a part where Zak throws an object out the doorway.

Demon House shows us evidence throughout the film many times. It is shown over and over so that we can make a judgment for ourselves on what we are seeing or hearing.

The evidence shown at the end we see once and never again. It felt like it was there to get in and get out before we can determine the authenticity of it.

The way that Demon House portrayed the final piece of evidence left me wanting more.

The ending wasn’t a total letdown for me because when Zak is alone in the Demon House it’s pure dread. You can feel what he is feeling and live out the horror with him.

Minus the few cons I have, this documentary is fantastic!

With all that said I want to tell you that this shouldn’t steer you away from watching this film. It is an entertaining documentary. While I have my opinions on some of the cons they are only opinions. You can make up your own judgment on the evidence that Zak gives to you.

The film delivered and was worth the wait in my eyes. Whether things are real or reenactments it doesn’t matter to me because of my love for this genre of film.

Demon House makes you feel for Zak and his crew. On one side, you are rooting for them to find the evidence they seek. The other side, you are asking why they are doing this to themselves. I kept asking myself why someone would want to do this to themselves? After all the evidence shows that something terrible can happen.

I have been a fan of Zak and Ghost Adventures since they released their first documentary. I can not recommend Demon House enough. It has everything I love about Ghost Adventures turned up to 110.

I will always be a fan of Zak and his mission and I hope he continues this journey for a long time. Thank you for creating this documentary. It was one hell of a ride!
